Is there a connection between ovarian cysts and fertility?

The simple answer is yes, but not all cysts are the culprit. It depends on what type of cyst you have been diagnosed with. The two main types of cysts that can cause infertility are Endometriomas and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

Endometriomas are cysts that can form due to endometriosis which is an ailment of the reproductive system in women. Endometrium is a tissue that usually lines the uterus. In endometriosis however, this tissue grows outside the uterus sometimes on the ovaries, pelvis and fallopian tubes.

In a normal menstrual cycle the lining of the uterus sheds causing bleeding. This same tissue when present outside of the uterus also does the same thing and starts to bleed. This is when a cyst can form because the tissue becomes irritated and can cause pain and infertility.

PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder which can cause many cysts to form and the ovaries to become enlarged. PCOS can be detected in the teen years when menstruation is abnormal. In women wanting to become pregnant, it can cause difficulty in conceiving, because ovulation and periods are disrupted.

PCOS can cause physical abnormalities such as excess hair growth and acne, as well as weight gain. It can also lead to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. The cause of PCOS is still unknown.

What can be done to prevent ovarian cysts?

Women who are trying to get pregnant need to know that there are natural, alternative treatments to prevent and get rid of their ovarian cysts. Traditional treatments should not be used on pregnant women or those who are trying to conceive due to the side effects they may have.

Contraceptives are a common treatment for PCOS, but for those trying to become pregnant that’s not an option. Surgery may not be an option because of the exposure to anesthesia. More and more women are turning to natural alternatives due to safety, cost and convenience.
