Causes of Ovarian Cysts – Getting to the Root of the Problem
The most frustrating thing about being diagnosed with ovarian cysts is what are the causes of ovarian cysts and how can you prevent them? The only way to really get any better is to finally figure out why you are getting them in the first place.
Ovarian cysts seem to be most common in women of childbearing age, but have been found in all age groups and races. Most of the cysts that are found are functional cysts called follicular cysts or corpus luteum cysts that resolve on their own. Sometimes these cysts grow and cause pain and discomfort.
**Complications can develop when a cyst ruptures and severe internal bleeding occurs. This is usually an emergency situation and requires immediate medical intervention.

So what exactly are the causes of ovarian cysts?
I think most doctors would agree that pinpointing the exact causes of ovarian cysts is not an easy task. It depends on the type of cyst you have and why it developed in the first place.
Hormone Levels
Most functional ovarian cysts form when there is a definite imbalance in hormone levels. Certain diseases can affect hormones such as thyroid conditions. Pregnancy can be a factor, especially in the second trimester when bhCG levels are at their highest.
Lifestyle Choices
Other causes of ovarian cysts seem to be related to lifestyle. Smoking has been found to be linked to the formation of ovarian cysts as has eating and dietary habits. Women who eat lots of overly processed foods have a higher incidence of cysts.
Toxins found in processed foods have been found to cause lots of ailments and changing what we eat is a simple and easy thing to do. Learning to eat healthier will reduce the risk of developing ovarian cysts and can go a long way in preventing them in the first place.
Detoxing our bodies can rid us of harmful chemicals. Keeping our liver functioning properly by staying away from too much alcohol, which can over work it, will get rid of excess hormones. Drinking plenty of water is a good habit to get into.
Stress
Stress also seems to be a cause of ovarian cysts. Women who experience stressful situations, either from a job, marriage problems, a death in the family or a number of other factors have been found to have an increase in ovarian cysts. Eliminating stress can reduce the incidence of cysts.
Lack of Exercise
Getting regular exercise can help reduce the chances of getting ovarian cysts. Even simple exercises like walking, bicycling and swimming have been found to be beneficial.

Please keep in mind that you should never skip your annual gynecological exams. A doctor can usually find an ovarian cyst by doing a pelvic exam and following through with an ultrasound if anything suspicious is noted. It is important to visit your doctor routinely with any questions or concerns you may have.
