Different Types of Cysts – What Are The Most Common Ovarian Cysts?
There are many different types of cysts that can cause differences in symptoms and ways in which they are treated. Most women will develop a cyst on the ovaries during her lifetime. Ovarian cysts are a natural part of ovulation throughout a woman’s monthly cycle.
Many of these cysts will never be noticed and will go untreated. Others can cause a lot of pain and discomfort and need some type of intervention. A cyst that ruptures or twists can be very uncomfortable and may require a trip to the hospital.

If you are unfamiliar with the different types of cysts, I will explain them below. The most common types of ovarian cysts are called functional cysts because they form during the normal menstrual cycle during ovulation.
Functional Cysts
Follicle Cysts – Form when the follicle fails to open up and release the egg. The sac continues to grow forming a cyst. This type of cyst will usually disappear on it’s own in a few months time.
Corpus Luteum Cysts – Form if the sac never dissolves after releasing the egg. It seals itself off and builds up fluid. It can grow quite large up to 4 inches in diameter. It too usually goes away after a few weeks time, but not always. A corpus luteum cyst can bleed or twist and cause significant pain. You may notice spotting in between periods or skipped periods. Some fertility drugs have been cited as a possible cause.
Other Different Types of Cysts
Endometriomas – Form when a woman has endometriosis which is a condition where tissue that acts like the lining of the uterus grows outside of it. This tissue can then attach itself to the ovaries causing a cyst. Significant pain can develop either during your period or intercourse.
Cystadenomas – Form from cells on the surface outside of the ovary. They are filled with a watery fluid or thick, sticky gel. These type of cysts can become large and cause significant pain.
Dermoid Cysts – Form from cells that develop into other types of cells. They are the strangest of all the different types of cysts in that they can contain hair, teeth, thyroid tissue, bone and other types of tissues. These too can grow large and cause pain.
Polycystic or PCOS – Form when eggs are never released from the follicle and cause a cyst. The difference being that it repeats itself over and over forming many clusters of cysts resembling grapes. This type of condition can cause infertility.
No one wants to have ovarian cysts but knowing about them can increase your awareness and hopefully educate you on what to do about them. Different types of cysts require different types of treatment. Most ovarian cysts will go away on their own. Some will be painful, others will quietly disappear. Some will respond to natural treatments, others like dermoid cysts may require surgery. Some are caused by lifestyle choices, others are there from birth.
