National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month – Remembering Women Worldwide
Did you know that September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month? Teal is the official color and should be worn to honor those who have been lost and those who are still fighting.
Ovarian cancer claims thousands of women every year. In 2010, it is estimated that there will be about 14,600 deaths from ovarian cancer in the United States alone. The American Cancer Society says that ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the reproductive system.

It is usually not found until the later stages because the early warning signs are not easily detected and very often mimic those of other ailments. Every woman should be aware of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and should be especially concerned about those that do not get better and increase in severity. Be watchful for the following four symptoms:
- Bloating
- Frequent Urination
- Pain in the Pelvic or Abdominal Region
- Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
In addition, you may experience any or all of the following:
- Nausea, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea or gas
- Intense fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Backaches
If any of these symptoms persist or worsen over the course of a couple weeks, you should see a doctor right away. You know your body and any sudden changes that make you feel that something is wrong should be listened to. Never dismiss that “gut feeling”.
So many women will ignore these symptoms until it is too late. Many of them mimic other conditions and can be confused with other ailments. For instance, ovarian cancer can cause bowel problems and is often confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
The goal of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is to educate women and their families to the danger of ovarian cancer and to hopefully some day find a cure for this terrible disease. The earlier this cancer is detected the better the survival rate.

Women in every state will celebrate the life they have been given because of early detection. Those that were not as fortunate will be celebrated because of the life they have given to those that love them. We should never forget all the courageous women who have battled ovarian cancer and won.
